Becoming a Competent and Ethical Practitioner of Psychology

Last December 7, 2012, we,the 25 Fourth Year BS Psychology students of Rizal Technological University Pasig Campus together with our adviser, Prof Agnes Montalbo attended the 6th annual seminar about "Becoming a Competent and Ethical Practitioner of Psychology" at Provincial Gymnasuim, Trece Martires Cavite. It's really an interesting topic and opportunity for us to learn more about practicing psychology as our field of specialization.

Speakers on the said seminar were former President of Philippine Psychological Association, Dr. Maria Caridad Tarroja; and Dr. Felipe Escano. Dr. Tarroja discussed the Republic Act 10029 which is also known as the Philippine Psychology Act; the Ethical Standards and the Career path for psychology majors while Dr. Escano discussed how Psychiatrists and Psychologists work hand on hand. We learned a lot from them which will be helpful for us to be a competent and ethical practitioner of psychology.
During lunch break, we were very proud to see the special number of clients at Cavite Center for mental Health Psychological Services. They dance the most popular song today and that is the "Gang Nam style". I'm so happy to see them dancing that song because even me I can't get the steps of that dance. While eating our lunch, we were entertained from the intermission number of clients. Before the seminar proceed to second speaker, we were energized by the icebreaker prepared by Dr. Tarroja and it really tests our mental abilities but we enjoyed it!

I also enjoyed participating at the open forum. Imagined! I was able to speak in front of many people which is one of my weaknesses. I was able speak with the former president of Philippine Psychological Association. Even though I feel so nervous on that time, I'm happy na rin because I saw  my friends, schoolmates and most espcially our professor, Prof. Agnes Montalbo cheered me. Before I went at the center of the gymnasium I've already feel tense because I feel I can't speak in front of them. As I was speaking, I feel I'm like a candle or ice which is continue to melt because of many eyes looking at me but then I was able to say what was in my mind. Unfortunately, I forgot to share my experiences regarding the answer that I am explaining. I feel my self-confidence was boost up to 10% because of what I did. I think this was the most unforgettable moment that I've ever experienced! I will really treasure that short moment speaking in front of  honorable Dr. Caridad Tarroja.
Before the seminar end, we were also entertained by  the last speaker because he discussed about love.. He gave inspirational quotes about love and how neurotransmitters like dopamine and sorotonin increases when a person is in love. I admit as a students, we were very interested in topic like love.
At the end of the seminar, our stomach is not just full of food but our mind as well was full of knowledge and ideas not just from the captivating words of speakers but also from those students who participated during the open forum.
After the seminar, we had a short tour at Cavite Center for Mental Health. We were guided by one of the OJT there and I like the way she gave information about CCMH.
After seminar and tour, we decided to went to Tagaytay where we did overlooking at Taal volcano. It's really relaxing because of the fresh and cool air. We're so very happy and we enjoyed staying there even just a short period time.

OJT in Industrial Setting

It's been 2 weeks since our first class for 2nd semester started but up to now, i'm still looking for a company that will hire me as one of their intern. i thought it's easy to find an industry that will accept ojts but i'm wrong because i'm applying for 2 weeks and up to now, i didn't received any call from those companies that i applied. i applied online in 6 different companies and i applied also walk-in in 6 different companies but up to now, only one company who send an email and saying that my application in their company is in the midst of processing the applicants. sad to say, i really want to undertake my ojt on that company because there's so many people saying that you will really be trained when you take your ojt there. i've just come to realize that it's really hard to look for a jobs because you have many competitors aside from your school mates, there were also many students from different and prominent universities. another reason that i think why it's hard to find jobs is that some companies are not really accepting if its fixed season especially the Christmas season is coming so they are many expenses in their company. sabi ko nga, ojt palang nahihirapan na most of my classmates, what if pag talagang trabaho na ang hinahanap namin, eh di mas mahirap!
does anyone know where i can undertake my OJT in industrial setting???

I feel so bored..

Hayyy... It's been almost 1 week of sembreak and I still feel bored... Having a semestral break is one of the days that I hate because every sembreak , I feel bored and I don't know what I'm going to do.. I just feel tired of thinking a possible ways to loose my feeling of boredom.. Buti na lang may facebook kahit papaano nalilibang ako sa mga games at pagtingin ng pictures pero minsan pag nagsawa na ko, ayan na naman mararamdaman ko na naman ang boredom. so what i did id to read again my notes from my previous subjects or read any books or magazines that makes me interest. Reader's Digest is one of them that I really enjoyed reading because you can really learn a lots from their articles and I love the quotes the writer always wrote!! One thing more that I did to loose my boredom is fixing my handouts from all my previous subjects though it's so tiring it makes me to be busy...
Right now, to avoid boredom I'm reading one by one the blogs of my professor who is the one who required us to make our blogs.. I enjoyed reading her blogs.. :)

Recreational Program at Rescue Center, DSWD Pasig

DSWD Logo made by children at Rescue Center
Last September 21, 2102, me and my friend Jennifer and Charlyn have finished our 360 hours of  On the Job Training in Clinical Setting at Rescue Center, DSWD Pasig. Before the last day of our training, we deciided to conduct a Recreational Program for those children who stay at Rescue Center and we did it last September 25, 2012. As part of the program, we prepared some games that they will really enjoy together with the intermission number presented by some of the children.
From the recreational program that we prepared, we were able to see the hidden talents of those children. They were able to share their talents in singing and dancing. We also prepared a merienda for them. It's so nice to see those children feel very happy and thankful for what we prepared.

For almost two and half months of training at Rescue Center, we learned a lot not just from the volunteers and social workers there but also to those children who shared their experiences. It's really a great experience to be with them. They makes us happy no matter how naughty they are.

Great Experience in Bato Spring Resort

Bato Spring Resort which is located in San Pablo, Laguna was one of the perfect place when you want to have some relaxation and to unwind from stresses in life. You can experience the coldness of  water coming from the mountain. You cannot stay for a long time because of the cold water spring. It was my second time to go there but it became more magnificent than the first time I saw it.
The first time we went there, there are only few guests who stays and visits  but when we came back  last week we were surprise when we saw many people waiting in the entrance and it's not easy for us to look for cottage where we will stay because when we went inside the resort, the cottages were fully accommodated. The vacant space in the surrounding was full of cars.  You cannot count the people who really enjoy to swim
despite of cold water...

There so many changes and improvements that made in the resort... There are already a store inside the resort and more cottages... BATO SPRING RESORT is considered as one of the popular, beautiful and most visited spot in Laguna..
IT'S REALLY A GREAT EXPERIENCE!! :)

The Art of the Counselor

THE ART OF THE COUNSELOR

In time to listen, He hears everything,
sees everything and speaks nothing.
In time to speak, He says the right
and never the wrong.

In time to judge, He uses his heart
 more than his mind.
In time to decide, He uses his his mind
more than his heart.

He commands without force,
convinces without argument
and clarifies without sermons.

He attracts without flattery,
Befriends without familiarity,
 and consoles without pity.

To the helpless, He is a motivating force
not a crutch.
To the lost, He is a signpost not the road.

This poem is one of the poem that I considered as very touching. I remember when our professor asked to memorize this poem when we, the second year psychology students took up the Guidance and Counseling subject. When i first read this poem, there's an undefined feeling that i felt, may be because the poem is very touching and makes me to realize how great the Guidance Counselor is.

Educational Tour at Elsie Gaches Village

My Classmates at Elsie Gaches Multi-Purpose Hall

Drawn by one of the clients in Elsie Gaches
The pictures were taken when we have our Educational tour at Elsie Gaches (Alabang, Muntinlupa City) last March 7, 2012).

It was my first time to go at Elsie Gaches so as we were on our way, there's so many question that linger in my mind like what is the feature of the institution, what specific mental retardation do they accept, does their facilities are enough for all the clients they have and what activities they have for client? This all questions was answered when the psychologist in Elsie Gaches tour us in different wards of the institution.

I learned a lot from the social worker who orient us before we visit all the clients, from the only doctor who give us information about the different diseases that the clients have and from the only one psychologist there who tour us in different wards.

While having our tour, I saw the clients feel happy to see us. Some clients greet us and want to talk with us. There also some clients who play football,  do some handicrafts, trained on some household  chores.

Educational Tour at Sanctuary Center

Sanctuary's Multi -Purpose Hall

Sanctuary's Entrance
The pictures were taken when we have our Educational tour at Sanctuary Center (Mandaluyong City) last March 7, 2012.
When we were already on the entrance of Sanctuary, I feel nervous though we have met some of the clients there when we conduct an outreach program last December at Rainforest Park (Maybunga Pasig City). But when we do our program, my feelings of nervous turns into happiness and joy seeing all the clients enjoy the activities we prepared for them. I saw all of the clients smiling when they saw us.

I really enjoy having a short conversation with some clients. I feel so very happy to see every one laughing. I feel so good to see all of them smiling. But the saddest part of making them happy for a while is to say good bye to them.

Hope we can back again there!
