The Art of the Counselor

THE ART OF THE COUNSELOR

In time to listen, He hears everything,
sees everything and speaks nothing.
In time to speak, He says the right
and never the wrong.

In time to judge, He uses his heart
 more than his mind.
In time to decide, He uses his his mind
more than his heart.

He commands without force,
convinces without argument
and clarifies without sermons.

He attracts without flattery,
Befriends without familiarity,
 and consoles without pity.

To the helpless, He is a motivating force
not a crutch.
To the lost, He is a signpost not the road.

This poem is one of the poem that I considered as very touching. I remember when our professor asked to memorize this poem when we, the second year psychology students took up the Guidance and Counseling subject. When i first read this poem, there's an undefined feeling that i felt, may be because the poem is very touching and makes me to realize how great the Guidance Counselor is.
